One particularly challenging project I had was a reception I did in Burbank. Things were ready, for the most part. The venue was beautiful. The musicians were well-rehearsed, the food was perfect, and the emcee was warmed up. We were kind of occupied with the ice sculpture, though. It was huge – a bas-relief of a portrait of the newlyweds. We didn’t have a refrigeration unit big enough to hold it, so it started melting long before the reception dinner began. We couldn’t afford the manpower to make another one, although if we had, it would only take around two hours to carve.

I struck a deal with the artists I worked with: they had to work hard and fast to make a new one, and I’d add a tidy sum to their bill.
